Are you working on your pancake mobility?
Are you struggling (like me) to make progress?
I’ve been “training" pancake mobility on and off for years, and I’ve not made very much progress. to be honest, I’ve not dedicated enough time to it. I’ve done the odd training block and thrown in a few stretches here and there, but its not enough.
I’ve set myself the goal of accomplishing a chest to floor pancake. I decided to dedicate one full training session per week to pancake mobility. I also plan to add in 10-15min of pancake stretching to my evening routine each day. Consistency is key!
My pancake mobility is terrible! I assume it comes from years of marathon and triathlon training as well as being a boss of the deadlift in a past life. My glutes and lower back are tight, and I’ve got an old adductor injury on the left side. Excuses aside, there is no reason why I can not accomplish this goal, except laziness.
This got me thinking… If I’m shit at pancake mobility, I’m sure there are a tone of other people in the same boat. Have you been doing the odd stretch here and there, and not seen very much progress?
Training solo requires a lot of self-motivation and willpower. It’s much easier to stay accountable when working in a group, or on a common goal. Tell people your goals - like I'm telling you my goals now - is also a great way to stay accountable.
Social media makes it easy to find people doing pancakes with their chest on the floor. It’s not so easy to find a programme to follow. So this is exactly where I can step in and use my unique ability of programme design:
I will be posting my pancake progress on my Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts
I will be sharing my pancake training program on the TSTM Training Template page
I will be encouraging people to join the TSTM Facebook page and share their pancake journey
The first pancake mobility program will be FREE. Each consecutive program will be $30AUD, less than the cost of most drop-in classes. Each program will be 4-6weeks of training and will require around 90-120minutes of your time.
I wouldn’t call myself a mobility expert. There is a lot of misconceptions in the fitness industry about mobility. Many personal trainers and coaches have very little experience with effective mobility programmes. As coaches, we’ve been teaching people to squat, deadlift, bench press and do pull-ups for decades. There is a tone of information around these movements online, in courses and in books. Mobility is a buzz word in the industry right now. People are starting to realise that their progress in the gym is being limited by their lack of mobility.
Over the years, I’ve done a lot of different mobility courses. Functional Range Conditioning and Emmet Louis Modern Methods of Mobility are two that stand out. I enjoy researching and playing with different training principles. I'm looking forward to expanding my knowledge and reaching a chest to floor pancake.
